Guide
Strengths
- Strong discard synergies: Many cards become stronger or trigger extra effects when discarded.
- Recurring threats: Dracula and Koschei can return to your hand, making them difficult to remove permanently.
- Consistent value: Spellbook and King Shahryar help activate your discard effects every round.
- Good late game: Dracula's Brides and a growing Koschei can overwhelm opponents.
- Multiple win conditions: Win through board pressure, recurring units, or Old MacDonald's disruption.
Weaknesses
- Slow starts: Fast aggressive decks can overwhelm you before your engine is ready.
- Engine dependent: Without Spellbook or King Shahryar, your discard synergies are less consistent.
- Unpredictable discards: Random discard effects may remove cards you wanted to keep.
- Limited board space: Dracula's Brides can fill your board and prevent you from playing other units.
- Requires planning: Playing cards in the wrong order can waste valuable discard effects.
Mulligan
Always look for:
- Ugly Duckling — Great early unit that benefits from discards.
- Spellbook — Helps trigger your discard synergies every round.
- King Shahryar — Provides recurring draw and discard effects.
Against Aggro:
- Prioritize Ugly Duckling, Asanbosam, and Quasimodo.
- Focus on early board presence instead of expensive cards.
Against Control:
- Prioritize Spellbook and King Shahryar.
- Set up your discard engine as early as possible.
Avoid keeping: Too many expensive cards, especially if you have no early plays.
Key combos and lines
Spellbook discards a card each round. If Dracula is in your graveyard, the discard brings him back to your hand. Replay Dracula to summon more Brides and build a powerful board.
2. King Shahryar + Old MacDonald
King Shahryar triggers discards every round, activating Old MacDonald. Each trigger adds Pumpkins to your opponent's deck, making their future draws worse.
3. Genie + Discard Payoffs
Genie discards your hand and replaces it with three random spells. Use this to trigger Aladdin, Koschei, Dracula, and Underworld Flare together for a powerful swing.
4. Ugly Duckling + Any Discard
Get Ugly Duckling onto the board early, then trigger a discard to transform it into a stronger Beautiful Swan.
5. Captain Ahab + Koschei
Captain Ahab discards your highest-cost card to damage an enemy. If Koschei is discarded, it returns to your hand stronger, giving you removal and a growing threat.
Spellbook adds cards to your hand, helping Shahrazad restore her barrier and stay alive longer.
Matchups
Vs. Aggro — Difficult
Focus on surviving! Play cheap units early and use Underworld Flare to remove threats. Don't spend too many turns setting up Spellbook if you're already losing the board.
Vs. Midrange — Balanced
Trade efficiently with your early units. Use Dracula's recursion and Koschei's growth to eventually outvalue your opponent.
Vs. Control — Favorable in longer games
Set up Spellbook and King Shahryar early. Keep bringing Dracula back and use Old MacDonald to disrupt your opponent's draws.
Vs. Combo — Depends on the opponent
Build pressure quickly. Don't give your opponent unlimited time to assemble their combo.
Vs. Discard — Engine dependent
Try to establish your discard payoffs early. Opposing discard effects may also help trigger some of your cards, so plan around them.
