Discard Midrange

by BDB @boutdebois-ms

CommunityArchetype: DiscardLadderFun★ DraculaEN

Game plan

Description:
The goal is to pressure your opponent during the first three turns with cards offering an absurd cost-to-power ratio, while cheating out cards like Aladdin or Esmeralda.

Game Plan:
Start with Ugly Duckling and a discard effect if possible. From there, the deck can be played as a tool box: keep discarding to maintain pressure or clear your opponent's board with Captain Ahab and Impudulu. Your main finisher is Koschei, which can be combined with Bullseye to ensure a Barrier.

Guide

Strengths

The main advantage of this list compared to most aggro decks is its strong draw engine (Quasimodo, Alibaba), combined with its discard core (Dracula/Koschei). This helps you maintain card advantage and avoid running out of resources, especially when playing against control decks.

The matchups are more balanced than with the standard Dracula control/heal build, which tends to struggle against aggressive decks but performs well in control mirrors.

Weaknesses

Struggles against midrange decks running big bodies like Boogeyman, as they are difficult to remove and put too much pressure on you. Captain Ahab's On Reveal effect alone isn't enough to deal with them.

The deck can also have some dead hands when you draw cards like Aladdin and Esmeralda but have no discard outlets to enable them.

Mulligan

You should be aggressive with your mulligan: you always have a 2-cost play available, so focus on finding your discard outlets and Koschei.

If your opponent has a specific threat you need to remove (like Glinda), you can keep Captain Ahab. Otherwise, you're better off looking for Aladdin and Esmeralda.

Key combos and lines

Start with Ugly Duckling and a discard effect if possible. Asanbosam is usually the best option, but depending on your hand, you may want to play Quasimodo instead.

Keep in mind that if you have Ugly Duckling on the board and discard Esmeralda, any Shield placed on Ugly Duckling will be lost when she transforms into Beautiful Swan.

Matchups

Against The 3 Not-So-Little Pigs, prioritize playing Dracula's Brides over Ugly Duckling. Your opponent can simply play Stroke of Midnight and Sandman on curve to remove Ugly Duckling before it even gets to trade with a Pig.

Notes and changes

Playing Dark Omen over Bullseye might be an upgrade, as Bullseye is too easily discarded by Quasimodo.
