Origins TCG demo 0.7.1: ranked mode is live before Steam Next Fest, and about 100 bugs are fixed

On 15 October Koin Games updated the Origins TCG demo on Steam to version 0.7.1, the day the playtest closed. The big news is ranked mode, four days before Steam Next Fest: for now the ladder stops at Grandmaster. The update also brings a new home screen and playmats, shows how many cards your opponent replaced at the mulligan and fixes about 100 bugs. There are no balance changes: card stats stay those of patch 0.7.

A small update before Steam Next Fest

On 15 October Koin Games updated the main demo of Origins TCG on Steam to version 0.7.1. The post on Steam, titled "Ranked is here!", went up at 20:52 UTC; the version number is on the official image of the update, "Steam Demo Update 0.7.1". "This update is small", the team writes, but it wanted to squeeze a few quality-of-life fixes and features into the demo before Steam Next Fest, which starts on 19 October.

It arrives the same day the playtest closed (our article): from now on the demo is the only build to play, and it is also the build of the Crimson Cup (our guide to Next Fest and the tournament). Several changes are the ones the playtest got with version 0.7.1 of 8 October; ranked, the new home screen, the playmats and the language at startup are new.

Ranked mode is live

"It's been 84 years... but Ranked Mode is finally here!", writes the team. You climb the ladder and earn prizes, along with "the sobering realization that everyone above you is somehow better at this game". For now the ladder stops at Grandmaster, the top division, and Koin says it will "open those doors soon".

On 21 September Koin had written that ranked would switch on with the start of Steam Next Fest: it arrived four days early. In the AMA of 2 October the team had given dates "in pencil": a season from 19 October to 4 December, and a Grandmaster leaderboard closed during the festival and open from 27 October, so that everyone starts at the same time (our article). The patch notes confirm that Grandmaster is closed for now, but they don't say whether the season counts from today or starts on 19 October. How ranked works, divisions and Victory Points included, is in our ranked guide.

Missions from ranked or PvE

Missions can now be completed as PvE, from the Missions section, or as PvP, from ranked: you choose. It is the same choice the playtest got on 8 October, after the build of 1 October had made missions PvE only.

What's new

The opponent's mulligan

During the mulligan phase you now see how many cards your opponent replaced. Players asked for it on Discord, and the team says the idea was so good that it implemented it the very next day.

New home screen and playmats

  • Home screen: "quite a few" UI enhancements. The team calls it a work in progress.
  • Playmats: the home screen and the match have a new playmat. "Oh whatever could this imply down the road?", the team adds, and says nothing more.

Commanders, the board and the intro

  • Commanders, as the notes call them, now say a voice line and show their nameplate when you inspect them.
  • Board effects: clicking around the board triggers visual and sound effects. Both are placeholders, and the team asks players to "only judge them a medium amount".
  • Intro cinematic: an intro movie plays once. It still needs polish, and the team wants opinions on Discord.

Improvements

The search in the collection accepts multi-word phrases, and searching for something a card summons also finds the card that summons it. On OriginsMeta, the search in Cards and in the deck builder already looks at card names and card text.

Emotes and voices

  • In the emote picker you can now clear a slot, so building your emote loadout is a little easier.
  • Huck Finn and Christopher Robin have new voices: they "no longer sound like creepy middle-aged men". Players had said so, and the team writes that internally everyone was saying the same thing.

The game starts in your language

The game should now start in your own language, if your system is set to one the game supports. Patch 0.7 had brought the game to 13 languages (our article).

Faster bots

Computer-controlled opponents no longer play quite so slowly. The team says there is more to do, but hopes the difference shows.

About 100 bugs fixed

By the team's count, the update fixes around 100 bugs. The notes don't list them.

Known issues

  • Game speed and animations. Some things are faster, but there is "still a LOT to do": it stays one of the team's highest priorities.
  • Grading visuals. They didn't make this update; Koin says it should have something to show "very soon". What grading is, with the sets and the Alpha Edition, is in our article.
  • Other languages. If you play in a language other than English, translations are still a work in progress and there is a lot of placeholder text.

What doesn't change

What we don't know yet

  • Whether the ranked season counts from 15 October or starts again on 19 October with Steam Next Fest.
  • Which prizes ranked gives, and when exactly the Grandmaster doors open: the AMA said 27 October, in pencil.
  • What the new playmats imply.
  • When the grading visuals arrive, and which bugs were fixed.

Where these notes come from

Frequently asked questions

Is ranked mode available in the Origins TCG demo?
Yes, since demo 0.7.1 of 15 October 2026, four days before Steam Next Fest. For now the ladder stops at Grandmaster: Koin says it will open that division soon, and in the AMA of 2 October the team had pencilled in 27 October.
Does demo 0.7.1 change card stats?
No. It has no balance changes: card stats stay those of patch 0.7 of 29 September 2026, the last balance patch before the Crimson Cup, and the card pages on OriginsMeta don't change.
Do ranked games count toward missions in the Origins TCG demo?
Yes. Since demo 0.7.1 you can complete missions as PvP from ranked, or as PvE from the Missions section.
