Crimson Cup: Anti-Van Helsing Combo

by soulontwitch @soulontwitchPro

Translated automatically from Italian: card names stay in English, as in the game. Original text (Italian) →

Game plan

The line-up SouL took to second place at the Crimson Cup, born from an idea by Nimer, tested with Lord Von and refined by him: a control (Merlin), a midrange (Mulan) and an aggro (Three Not So Little Pigs), all three tuned to play as combo decks. The target is Van Helsing healing, in their view the top tier deck of the meta: you don't ban it and you run over it. These are the lists Koin Games published on finals day, 25 October 2026.

The three decks

Deck A · Control

Merlin Control Combo · Merlin (Legendary)

Role in the set

The best deck of the three and SouL's favourite: "the most solid of all", one that "absolutely needs a nerf". The first version relied only on casting two Obliterates one after the other, and if both Obliterates sit at the bottom of the deck you lose the game. With Puck and First Aid the healing helps you control the board and, combined with Puck, hits the opponent and helps you close out games. It was often banned against him in the tournament.

Deck B · Midrange

Mulan Midrange Combo · Mulan (Legendary)

Role in the set

The weakest of the three according to SouL, but the one that closes the circle of the combo line-up. It was never banned against him in the tournament. In the final it lost to CoachCrono's Van Helsing, the loss that shouldn't have happened.

Deck C · Aggro

Pigs Aggro · Three Not So Little Pigs (Legendary)

Role in the set

The least combo of the three: it plays fairly aggro, but especially against Van Helsing it keeps resources in hand to drop Glinda and Sandman on the opponent's reveal. Then it fills the board in a single turn, with two Reinforcements and the other 1-mana spells the deck is full of, to trigger Glinda five, six, seven times over a couple of turns and build a monster board. The right moment is when the opponent has only 7 mana, so they can't answer with Forbidden Knowledge.

Conquest rules

Three different Legendaries and at least 8 different unique cards between any two decks, as in the Crimson Cup.

  • A and B: 9 different cards
  • A and C: 10 different cards
  • B and C: 10 different cards

Guide

Strengths

Against Van Helsing. In the tournament SouL faced players with Van Helsing in 6 rounds out of 7 and, simply by not banning it, always ran over them: every round won 2-0 except one, won 2-1 against an opponent without Van Helsing.

Weaknesses

The line-up is built against Van Helsing: if the opponent manages to get it through, maybe with an unlucky combination of locations as in the first game of the final, suddenly you are the one behind. Against line-ups without Van Helsing the games are closer.

Matchups

Against CoachCrono (Three Not So Little Pigs, Van Helsing, Legion of the Dead): 2-0 before the finals, running over his Van Helsing. In the best-of-five final, the first game lost to Van Helsing with bad locations, then 2-2 and the deciding game lost to his aggro deck.

Notes

Bans: SouL's opponents often banned the Pigs and Merlin, never Mulan. The full story of the line-up and the final is in the interview with SouL on OriginsMeta.
