The report
On 15 September a player posted on the Steam forum an account of four games against Dracula, the boss of the demo missions. The earlier bosses, they wrote, were strong but fair: all beaten at the first try with the premade decks unlocked just before them. Dracula, instead, seemed to get every "random" effect right:
- pumpkins always hitting the barrier with the least health;
- spells that deal 6 damage at random always landing on the strongest minion with 6 Health or less;
- random discards always taking the most dangerous card in hand;
- random summons always in the best space.
The team's answer
Developer Fenchurch replied on 16 September: "Our boss fight AI will be getting a re-work in Demo v2". He added that the team will keep watching and changing how boss fights and card unlocking work.
It is not the first change to the bosses. The playtest patch notes 0.6.3 of 27 August had already given them "new upgraded bot intelligence", asking players whether they had become smarter or dumber.
Why it matters
Bosses are part of the unlock path: in the playtest a deck opens after three ranked wins and a win against an AI boss. A boss that feels unfair slows down the whole collection. It is the second time in a week that this path comes back from the feedback threads, after the reply of 14 September about making those matches PvE only.
What came next
On 21 September the first big demo update arrived. The announcement does not mention the bosses: whether the new AI is already in it is not known yet.
